Item Background: the Pickwick Papers was originally published in parts over a period of years in a magazine. In 1837, due the popularity of the stories, Prentis and Hall published the stories in one volume which sold extremely well.
First editions signed by the author are rare and those in excellent condition are valued in thousands. This particular volume ith its connection with your ancestor may well be more valuable if the signature and dedication can be proved as genuine.
Value Range: First editions without signatures in reasonable condition can sell for around £150. Authenticated sign copies can sell for thousands depending on the condition. Your copy has special interest so could be valued much more. I would not like to put an upper limit on the value range.
Recommendations: You have a valuable and collectible book if it can be proved as genuine. I would take the trouble of getting it valued for insurance purposes and take advice from a specilist as to the its storage and care.
I would recommend Peter Harrington Books, 100 Fulham Road, Chelsea, London, SW3 6HS, Tel: +44 (0)20 7591 0220 if you should want to act on my recommendations.
