My wife and I purchased Volume I & II of the Comic History of England and also Comic History of Rome, both authored by Gilbert Abbott A'Beckett, Illustrated by John Leech. We are having trouble determing the Edition of each, and the value of each. Also, on each of the books in the inside front cover there is a family crest afixed belonging to Alexander Hamilton Rice and Eleanor Elkins Rice. After research these were obviously very influential people during the mid 1800's (she was a Titanic survivor and he a medical doctor / explorer). I am assuming this adds value to the collection. My question is to you in the forum, what has been your experience with the valuation results of Rarelist? Any other recommendations? Any feedback to any of this posting is appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely

James Wareham

As one of the founders of Rarelist, I can categorically say that we have had good feedback on our valuation service. It is difficult for anyone to give an opinion without at least a photograph of the book. If you want to upload a photo, then just list the book and ask members to have a look at the photo. If you wish a quick valuation, then go to our valuation service where you can upload pictures and one of our panel should pick it up soon.

I have sold to those unaware of bookselling websites, who searched and found books by the comments I had made on our Forum. I know that I have created interest for others by encouraging them to discuss it on the Forum.

So it may take time but the Forum does create feedback.

If the 'Bradbury and Evans' element of the publishers' imprint reads 'Bradbury and Evans,' then the volumes are of first/early issue. Look in the inner margins - close to where the leaves meet the spine - for three stab holes, if there they were bound from the original parts. C/Eng will have the dates 1847/48, C/Rome will carry no date. If the Bradbury and Evans element contains either 'Co.' or 'Agnew,' then the volumes were published after 1865, and hence they're a much later issue.
They have a lovely provenance.
