(Back to list)

I have just acquired a copy of this book and i am having problems researching it. It is a dark red, Morrocan leather perhaps with raised bands on the spine and gold lettering to spine and pattern and also pattern to front and back.Inside is dark green. There is a portrait in black engraving with Martin Droeshaut? and H Robinson written under it.There follows a tissue page and the frontis page with The dramatic works of William Shakespeare with GLOSSARY a new edition corrected and improved London Henry G Bohn.
The next page reads to the most noble Henry petty Fitzmaurice marqis of Lansdowne KG and a list of other titles.
Any info appreciated.

Perhaps you might like to upload some photographs of the book. As a standard member, you can do that free. This will help other members when discussing the volume. As far Shakespeare's are concerned, there have been several forum postings on this topic and you might like to read those. Generally, because of the large volume of Shakespeare's, mots are unlikely to be significantly valuable. However, it's ownership if genuine might attract a higher value.

I wondered if you were stating that the next page was hand written, or part of the page text?
I shall look up the Henry G Bohn context first for you, when I find a moment.

Hello, thank you for the suggestions. The page is not hand written. I can't find a way to add photos to the forum so have listed it for sale so please have a look at the pictures there. I think Henry Bohn recently sold off his library of books, there is some info on Wilkopedia.

The Henry G Bohn findings all appear 1840s and 1850s. There was an 1863 item attributed to Henry G Bohn as the author of "The biography and bibliography of Shakespeare".
Many items describe the same quality of craftmanship, and the desciption 5 raised bands forming 6 panels. The price range of each is so varied, single volumes can be found cheaply, but all suggest 15 volumes, but state varying improvements, added text and glossary or forward by.....
So it is firstly difficult to be certain if you have a reprint of an earlier item, and I was not certain if yours had numerous illustrations was part of a set or a single complete volume.....if so this would be the only case I found.

Thank you for your post. I'm sorry i have been away on holiday.
My book is one complete volume, i believe. Apart from the front plate it has no illustrations.Still a mystery. It once took me 3 years to find out information about an old illustration i own so i shall keep searching!

I like your dedication. I am considering buying into further data bases, but wonder if I may be searching twice or three times as much as I do, still to retrieve no further information. In other words it would not be cost effective.
It seems patience is the virtue of true book collectors; I would certainly prefer to spend the time looking though a pile of books rather than searching on the internet.
I am certain you will find your answer, but as I often do, I shall relook through the Forum posts and see if I can research again, and strike lucky. This is not the end of the matter, feel free to write again. I have not looked into ownership or illustrator side, as you impress me as the type to enjoy that side of the investigating for yourself.

I must admit i seem to dip in and out where researching my own books is concerned. I often become inspired to start searching again from a different angle having read an article or watched a programme loosely linked to the book concerned.
Thank you for keeping an eye open for me.
