Negotiable
(Back to list)
Posted on 2010 May 27 15:59 (Thursday) By JohnHolden (ID:1477, Silver, Web Site)
rarelist came up briefly in a discussion on the Abebooks bookseller forum yesterday.
There were some misunderstandings which I hopefully corrected but one point was raised that the writer put forward as a reason why he would not use the site.
It is a small point but one that has always niggled me as well on any site that uses it, it is the negotiable/not negotiable option.
The yes option suggests a certain desperation to move stock with perhaps the implication that all is not quite what it seems whilst the no option suggests that there is no chance of a trade discount or an adjustment for a bulk purchase.
It might be a worthwhile option on eBay when clearing out the attic and happy to get anything for your rubbish.
I've never felt that it sits well on a serious site. A serious buyer can and will ask for a "better" price if they feel justified.

As a follow-up to my post, which I know has some factual inaccuracies which I will leave for the sake of promoting debate, a further comment was made about rarelist suggesting that a few minor tweaks could change the site into the next biblio when it was selling a lot.

Thanks for that John. It is a bit like a County Council meeting, we hear and make suggestions. I whole heartedly agree about the potential, it/we actually has/have no limits with the correct enthusiasm from members, and we have some good members too.
Let us hone our direction (steering group)??(no)?? or get some deadlines and start "tweaking" not just towards biblio, but to surpass with excellent standards.
That said, does having both options of negotiable/non-negotiable mean double standards??
We do have novices, and also aim for the serious collector and seller. Provided we handle things correctly hopefully you will agree we can avoid double standards and may well be best to aim for a two tier site. I cannot ask this of the serious collectors or sellers, but would hope that we were a conscientious Community of Mutual Interest and would monitor or guide newcomers.
Which I feel has been my role by and large.

I asked for examples of minor tweaks and out of the suggestions most were either purely cosmetic or moving the site to a different direction, like incorporating OSCommerce, or suggesting that M2MN was too close to MLM, dumping all those the remaining two have, I think, some merit and I append them-
"Move the FEATURED items to the bottom or another page. And list the price. No one gives a hoot about page views except booksellers. Not buyers.
Create some semblance of cataloging in the left panel. Dedicate it to functions useful in finding a book or to help browse the listings. Maybe include search bar."

I don't think negotiable/none negotiable suggests double standards but it does suggest a lack of professionalism, a bit Exchange and Mart or ebay.
Nothing wrong with novices as long as the goals are sound, there's a world between somebody who wants to be a bookseller and the person who inherited a few books off grandad and wants to sell them with no intention of going any further than that.

Yes, that said, I am still striving to ensure both novice and inherited sellers aim at the same standards we would all aim for. A base line other sites do not attempt.
I shall leave David and Peter to mull over the paragraph/post before last.
I know discussion outlines aims, but I wish to hear the changes we can actually bring into place.

So far I have found that making changes to RareList is a damned-if-you-do-&-damned if-you-dont situation !! having said that, there are always things that can be done to help our users. I'll put a search box in the top right when I get some time - that should help a bit !!
