Hi,
I'm just looking for some rough idea of vlaue if possible.
I remembered whilst haveing a clear out that I have a 1st Edition copy of the BFG signed "To William love Roald Dhal". It has its dust cover and looks in good condition to me.
Thanks for any info.

- from a quick look around it seems to me like firsts of BFG in excellent conditon might be worth a few hundred, but I suspect the value really would be in the signature, probably much more than the book. - You'd have to ask someone else about that though...were you the 'William" perhaps?

I agree, with domino, a confirmation of the price accurately judging the condition should be straight forward. I think the 1982 Cape (UK) is going for £45 almost twice the price of the USA Farrar Straus edition, £25; but internet prices are usually double these guide price estimates. So if in fine condition and Cape it would be worth £5 for a full search by our Valuation Service.

If you double again at least for the signature, but a few words of warning. I did sell Going Solo 6 years ago for £95. Approximately £80 more than the usual first edition value then; but provenance of the signature was provided, and accepted by the dealer. So on the one hand proof of a genuine signature will increase your chances of recieiving these asking prices. But the dedication could decrease the price, unless you have a connection with the Dahl family, or the William concerned did or is in any other way famous. Many true collectors and gift buyers do not value the dedication included in a book, and feel it detracts.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it is worth something then!
I am indeed the William the book was signed to. My Dad took me to Roald Dhals (he worked and still works for Penguin) house when I was approx 8 or 9. I was lucky enough to meet Roald Dhal and even got shown the caravans where he wrote all his books. At the time I think I was more interested in the bowl of ice cream I was given....If my memory serves me correctly I also played with his (now famous) grandaughter Sophie who is roughly my age.
Sadly I am not famous in any shape or form so the dedication to me is worthless.
I'll prob get the full valuation done. I'll check tonight, but I am sure it is a 1st edtion from Cape.

Sorry I had awaited you doing the valuation, (obviously there are other panel members who may pick it up to value). The investigation time would be taken seeing if the asking price will be a true reflection of the value of the signature. Also as stated what affect the name will have.

Other than you still having some of the icecream, any other provenance or if your father has any original advertising or promotion items to go with it. Then the full story may be of attraction to someone.

The positives are it is still a book worth reading, and the author has held it and signed it; plus there are plenty of Williams out there who could have relatives wishing to buy a special gift. (Have you tried HRH, as she is featured in the book, and has a Grandson.....(off with his head for suggesting such a thing).

But you see that you do sometimes have to turn a negative into a positive. It is just a case that it narrows the market tremendously.

But as domino states, a phot would be brilliant. Many authors now have to grin and bear book buyers insisting on a photograph, (at signings), for provenance these days. I have never had the nerve.

Oh and thank you for reminding me. I picked up a boxed signed limited edition of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight. I only noticed yesterday that it was dedicated to Helen, next to the dragon illustration.

As it was in different pen to the signature it surely is not by Anne, so that seems a minus on the value front. I cannot singe that bit of the page and blame it on the dragon can I.

Any one know a Helen, who likes Anne McCaffrey??
