I have an English Dictionary title - Nimmo's Thumb English Dictionary which was given to me by my grandfather
He has got this book from Sir John Kothalawala, who has recieved it from an English planter who has been in Sri Lanka before we got independance from England
This book is sized 2"X3" inches
It has been published by a company named Edinburgh and London Nimmo, Hay & Mitchell Ltd.
The book is still in quite good condition
I searched in the net regarding this book but couldnt get any details
In the book theres no year of publication
It has 386 pages (not sides but a single page)
And it also has the signature of the author probably
Could someone please find tell me more details regarding the year of this book
Thank you

- interesting history, - seems to be some kind of miniature - I found this ref to something similar,
".. Nimmo's thumb English dictionary
Book 386 [i.e. 778] p. : 1 port. ; 68 mm.
Edinburgh ; and London : Nimmo, Hay, & Mitchell Ltd., [190-?]
Notes
* "Printed by Lorimer & Chalmers, Edinburgh."--T.p. verso.
* Text printed with spine at top; two pages are given single number.
Local Notes
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: Original black suede; with gold stamping on spine; top edge gilt; with off-white endpapers. Inscription in pencil: "May 29, '25 1/6."
- Hard to deduce from inscription, maybe 1920s??? Just guessing though...

Obviously Nimmo and Hay works have been published 1870s through to the 1920s. What surprised me was the author signing a dictionary. I have found other adverts which indicate this though. Additionally, exported books where written on a finer paper to reduce wieght, is it suggested that the paper was only written upon single sides??

Here I have uploaded a pic of the 1st inner pages of the book
As I told u Im not sure whether it is the sign of the author or someone who owned it as I cant read it correctly
Actually the book is written on both side of a single page

- hard to tell from small pic, but I think that's not a signature, but a print of 'dr johnson' & printed signature underneath....?

I have to agree, it was common to print signature facsimile and print of author. I also do not think we are talking as early as the first 1755, more like one hundred years later. I shall keep looking though.

I did not think that they were still around. Possibly absorbed by some better known publisher, I shall look into that.
