Book condition: Fair. The contents of all books are clean and bright and in good condition for books of this age. Book cover condition is poor with the spines partly/all missing and only one board per book. (See photos)
Would be a handsome collectors set if rebound and an interesting piece of literary history as they stand.

Vol III: Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Alls Well That Ends Well, Taming of the Shrew and Winters Tale
Vol IV: Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, King John, King Richard II, and King Henry IV Part 1

Title: The Works of Shakespear in Six Volumes, Carefully Revised and Corrected by the Former Editions: Complete Set in 6 Volumes (William Shakespeare)
Author: William Shakespeare
Price: GBP 600.00
Publisher: J. and P. Knapton, Published: 1745

Complete six volume set. Later quarter green leather bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Bookbinder label to each volume (M.L. Silva Lisboa/Lisbon). Rubbing and chipping to boards, spines rubbed with some tears to leather on board edges. Very solid bindings, no cracking to joints. Volume II is damaged - half of the last page of text (The Winters Tale p607/608) and half of the rear free endpaper are torn off and absent. Volume two also has some light water staining to the outside margin of the first 20 pages. Text has some foxing, quate dark in places. Volume VI has some worming towards the inner margin slightly affecting the text. Name stamp in old ink to top corner of each title page, more recent name to the title page of volume IV. Volume I includes Pope's preface and Rowe's Account of the Life of Mr. William Shakespear. Volume I also includes an Advertisement from the Booksellers, attacking the 1744 Hanmer edition and showing the sources of his emendments. This edition was apparently issued to discredit Hanmer and undercut the price of his edition. It is likely that William Warburton had a hand in the editing of this edition - and Warburton's own edition was published two years later. (See Giles E. Dawson: Studies in Bibliography Vol. 2 - Warburton, Hanmer, and the 1745 Edition of Shakespeare.) ESTC T63040., Book Condition: Good+, Binding: Hardback. Printed pages: 8vo. lxvi, [2], 526 + 608 + 568 + 502 + 543 + 544, [24] (Glossary), Size: 5.25 x 7.75 inches (14 x 20 cm) (More info)
