One hundred and eighty four hand numbered pages in this remarkable, 501+ year old, handwritten manuscript ledger, journal and diary : " 1505 Gendenze di Saviz - gnano" as stated on the cover. The first page begins: "Libro de tuto _____ quale so tato asan__giano ala venuta mia. [T]o Alexandro salueto schrise e soto schrise de mia gnovia mar...." Not written by a scribe, this is a working journal and ledger containing hundreds of business entries, purchases, loans and repayments. There are long lists of foods and prices for what is assuredly shopping lists for parties and feasts. There are also what appears to be observations and business maxims and poetry in a number of entries. Certainly this fascinating book requires more research. The original vellum cover is in somewhat rough shape with tears, rubbing and bumping and is barely attached to the text block though still held by the rear binding cords. Interior is in excellent shape save for the odd and to be expected ink blot, age-toning and light soiling. Please email for pictures of this rare manuscript.

On offer is a remarkable ancient document, 32 pp, handwritten in French gothic calligraphy, relating to the family of Martel de Chabans, as noted by later handwritten notes on later paper rag cover, who makes the inquiry of the 16th century genealogists. The document features three bold signatures of the authors but they are illegible. This cover also features the handstamp of Cabinet D'Hozier, one of the most famous genealogists of the 19th century. This medieval document is fragile and the first two pages feature a number of faults, some loss but overall this superb document is legible and has later day research notes. Fair.

Inherited from Vincent Starret, author, newsman (Chicago Tribune), founding member of The Baker Street Irregulars. A Renaissance book entitled Satire alla Carlona by Andrea Da Bergama also known as Nelli Pietro? In good condition for its age. It was first published in Italy in 1548. Appears to be handmade, with a vellum cover. It's date is printed on the spine. I cannot tell if it was printed or composed by hand, looks to be two volumes in one. Within the inside cover is a book plate belonging to Charles James Fox (24 January 1749 ? 13 September 1806) was a prominent British Whig politician. He is noted as an anti-slavery campaigner, a supporter of American independence from Britain, and as a supporter of the French Revolution. He held several senior government offices, including being Britain's first Foreign Secretary.)

On offer: "Entrate dela Sede Apostolica con la uscita ordinaria e straordinaria dell anno 1614" This is an extraordinary ancient Italian manuscript being a detailed list of papal income and expenses for the year of 1614, pontificate of Pope Paul V. (1605-1621, Camillo Borghese). Listed are the regular revenues from the papal possessions in Italy (Rome, Romagna, Marche, Umbria, Campagna, Ferrara, Bologna, Benevento) and France (Avignon) as well as uncertain income from varied sources, e.g. collections in Spain, Portugal, Naples. The income list is followed by an account of papal expenditure. Among the certain expenditure figures payment for Cardinals, ten papal envoys, like the nuntio to Portugal, papal officers, soldiers ("soldati di Castello") or cloth for the famous papal Swiss Guard ("Vestiti delli Svizzeri che si fanno ogni nove mesi"), as well as the papal library etc. Highly interesting, this manuscript contains remarkable details on the nature of papal income; revenues deriving from the vineyard of Pope Julius II; the papal galleys ("Galere della Sede Apostolica"); revenues from the "malefici" being a 'contribution' (read tax) from witches, magicians and heretics. [NOTA BENE: certainly the most interesting and surprising to modern eyes, to the papal income of that time and counted as "uncertain" income, the papal budget previews the considerable sum of 10,000 scudi from the witches of Rome ("Da Malefii di Roma"), and another 10,000 scudi from the witches of the provinces of Romagna and Marche.] Entries also include provisions in case the revenue targets of those provinces weren't reached: "quando li Maleficii di Romagna non arrivano a scudi quatromilia ducento d'oro et quelle della Marca a 6000 di moneta, che sono dati in assegnamento fermo alli Thesorieri , la Camera e tenuta a far buono il meno che frutassero…" This manuscript is superbly placed with the Holy Roman Inquisition at its height with the burning of Giordano Bruno burned in 1600, the conflict with Cremonini and Galileo Galileo condemned in 1633. 20 pages, 26.5 x 19 cm professionally bound in an elegant, charming unique contemporary cardboard. Small water stains throughout on left upper corner of the ms document, a ding to upper front cover tip, light soiling to title pastedown, otherwise very good condition. Done in one very fine hand, a real piece of calligraphic art, this is a superb ancient Papal document and singularly unique period of time of the Roman Inquisition and Pope Paul V battle against Copernican theory. On offer is a superb 17th century relic of to historians and collectors of legal matters, jurisprudence and 'lawyering' being a nine [9] page handwritten manuscript document from the reign of Charles II, circa 1677-1678. This fine paper document is an agreement settling a lawsuit. Stunning calligraphy in Latin over 9 folio-sized pages details the large number of people involved in the suit. The plaintiffs, Mary Phesaunt and John Bordman, have brought the case against a large number of defendants and that the defendants are to recognize certain specified pieces of land as belonging to the plaintiffs in perpetuity, and the agreement serves as proof or receipt that the plaintiffs paid 100 pounds sterling to the defendants for the land. This stunning manuscript may or may not have been a ficitious lawsuit as was quite common in the era. Given the lack of honorifics these were 'regular' folks appear to be using a legal bludgeon for profit. Lovers of bindery arts will find the 'file binding', being a little strip of parchment that is wound through the holes of the paper to hold the sheets together of interest but given the fact that the document is circa mid half of the 17th century the unique watermarks place the paper from Auvergne, France circa 1580-1590! Legal malfeasance via predatory lawsuits was not uncommon in the era and this appears to be a superb example in very fine condition. Written in superb medieval calligraphy one can make out East Langton, a small village in the Langtons near Market Harborough Leicestershire. This manuscript has been folded in half and a shallow fold in the quarters. F.

Book Title: 1694 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTER OUTLINING THE MALADIES OF THE ARMY OF KING LOUIS XIV FROM THE SOON TO BE FAMOUS HERO OF THE SIEGE OF ENTREVAUX (Click for more info)
Author: CAPTAIN DE LA CONTARDIERE

Owner: benkatz (ID:1317, Silver) Contact

Book Description: ENTREVAUX FRANCE, 1694. Book Condition: Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a superb manuscript letter dated 29th of September Entrevaux handwritten by the noted Captain de la Contardiere interesting letter on a variety of military subjects: the King's ordinances being stolen, a Council of War, a large number of maladies besetting the King's army, issues with a particular Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment etc. De la Contardiere is famous for his defense of Entrevaux in 1704. The historical background is fascinating: King Louis XIV of France having accepted the throne of Spain for his grandson, Philippe of Anjou, found himself in war against Austria, England, Holland and the Duchy of Savoy. These events are known as "The War of the Spanish Succession: 1701 to 1713". The army of the Duke of Savoy, Victor-Amedee was mobilized to invade Provence. The garrisons of the forts of Entraunes and Rabbets, in its possession, were reinforced. The English fleet under Admiral Rook blocked Antibes, preventing with the French reinforcements of the Le chevalier de Damas from returning to Entrevaux with artillery. Le chevalier de Blaignac with 1,500 Savoyard troops and two fauconneaux [small field guns] went up the valley of Estéron and placed his seige at Entrevaux, which was defended by a valorous soldier, the Captain de la Contardiere, a friend of Vauban [the great expert on fortifications]. The new fortifications, which were not completely finished, were to stand the test of fire on June 7, 1704. The artillery of the fortress was not yet in place. The bourgeois garrison and militia had ten arquebuses with hooks, in addition to the individual armament. The enemy army occupied the plateauxs of Pigière and Closes dominating Entrevaux. They did not have siege cannons, as they were too heavy to be transferred onto the bad mountain lanes. On June 14, after one week of siege, to relieve the pressure, de la Contardiere decided to carry out a night attack, which was a total success. A breach was opened in the palisade surrounding the Savoyard camp. The impetuous attack of the Entrevalais causes a rout of the enemies, who, although superior of number, flew towards Seds. 8.5" x 7", overall VG. Manuscript. Bookseller Inventory # 0001096

A SERIES of GENUINE LETTERS BETWEEN HENRY and FRANCIS 1770 - The Third Edition - Volume II In her own life time, Griffith was probably best regarded for the letters between her and her husband that were published over six volumes. A Series of Genuine Letters between Henry and Frances (1757-1770) was a celebrated series that featured the edited letters of Mr. and Mrs. Griffith as they moved through courtship to marriage. In the letters, genuine sentimentality is the mode of discourse, and women seem to have been drawn to Griffith as a model of womanhood, illustrating sought-after traits such as intelligence, reflection, and humour. Frances Burney was a fan of this collection, and she referred to the letters as an encouragement for her own style of heartfelt writing. Condition: Acceptable 1770 Third Edition Volume III (MDCCLXX). Covers and spine are bumped, rubbed and there is a larger rub mark on the back outside cover at the bottom edge. Please look at the attached photographs. The pages are thin, tanned and with some creasing. There is writing and underlining on the inside front and back covers, and there is also underlining, and writing on some of the pages. The English is not modern and is from the 1770`s. Very Rare. (az-3) www.baileybooks104.com
